TREC requires 18 hours of approved CE every two years. Here's what you need to know.

    Texas requires every licensed agent and broker to complete 18 TREC-approved CE hours per renewal cycle — no exceptions.

  2. 11 Hours Are Mandatory

    Legal Update I & II (8 hrs combined) plus Contracts (3 hrs) — TREC-required courses every renewal cycle, same curriculum for everyone.

  3. 7 Hours Are YOUR Choice

    Elective CE — pick any TREC-approved topic. Use these hours to build real business skills, not just satisfy a compliance checkbox.

How CE Works in Texas

TREC requires 18 hours of continuing education every two years. Here's exactly what that means for your license renewal.

New agent? This 18-hour CE cycle applies to your second renewal and beyond. If you haven't completed your first renewal yet, you're in the Sales Apprentice Education (SAE) period — a separate 90-hour requirement. See the FAQ for details.

    Know Your 18-Hour Requirement

    Every 2 Years

    Texas law requires every licensed agent and broker to complete 18 CE hours each renewal cycle. TREC divides these into 11 mandatory hours (steps 2–4) and 7 elective hours (step 5).

    Legal Update I

    4 hrs Mandatory

    TREC rule changes, contract form updates, and Texas real estate law amendments for the current renewal period. Same curriculum across all approved providers — no substitutions allowed.

  3. 3

    Legal Update II

    4 hrs Mandatory

    Agency relationships, ethics, and fiduciary duties under Texas law. Must be completed in the same two-year renewal cycle as Legal Update I.

  4. 4

    Contracts

    3 hrs Mandatory

    TREC-promulgated contract forms, addenda, and disclosure requirements. Required every renewal cycle alongside both Legal Updates to ensure agents maintain current contract knowledge.

  5. 5

    Elective CE — StepStone covers this

    7 hrs Your choice
